Summer Tasks - Definitions

IDENTITY   The condition of being oneself or itself and not another.


COLLECTIVE IDENTITY  The individuals sense of belonging to a group (part of a personal identity)


MEDIATION  A negotiation to resolve differences that are conducted by some impartial party.


REPRESENTATION   The action of speaking on behalf of someone or the state of being so represented. 
                          The description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way.


HEGEMONY  The leadership or dominance by a sole country or social group.
 - This can be referred to when the black/white segregation was at its peak. For example the black and white segregation where white people were seen as better than black. Rosa Parks fought for her seat on a bus as the segregation meant that she could only sit in certain seats which were towards the back.


COLONIALISM  The policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country.


POST-COLONIALISM  Intellectual disclosure that consists of reactions to, and analysis of the cultural legacy of colonialism.


IMPERIAL 'OTHER'  The policy of having or extending control over the territory of other nations.


YOUTH SUBCULTURE  A minority youth culture whose distinctiveness depended largely on the social class and ethnic background of it's members; often characterised by its adoption of a particular music genre.


SYNCRETISM  The attempted reconciliation or union of different or opposing principles, practices or parties as in philosophy or religion.


POST-MODERNISM  A number of trends or movements in the arts and literature developing in the 1970s in reaction to or rejection of the dogma, principles or practices of established modernism.
